AMAZING GRACE ***
• Rated PG
• Playing At: AMC Orange Park 24, AMC Regency 24, Regal Avenues 20, Regal Beach Blvd. 18
In 18th-century England, the slave trade was big business. Young idealist William Wilberforce (Ioan Gruffudd) is vehemently opposed to it and takes his passion to Parliament in an effort to end the abhorrent practice. With Albert Finney, Michael Gambon, Rufus Sewell and Jeremy Swift.
BLACK SNAKE MOAN **
• Rated PG
• Playing At: AMC Regency 24
Writer/director Craig Brewer’s film is entertaining weirdness, mostly due to knockout performances by Samuel L. Jackson and Christina Ricci. (Justin Timberlake isn’t bad, either.) Jackson, with grizzled white hair and beard, plays Lazarus, a former blues guitarist-turned-farmer whose wife is dumping him for his younger brother. Rae (Ricci) has a boyfriend, Ronnie (Timberlake), but they’ve got problems: He throws up when stressed; she’s a hopeless nymphomaniac. Two hours after he deploys to a warzone, she’s in the sack with the local drug dealer. Determined to right Rae’s sexual wrongs, Lazarus chains her to a radiator to save her from herself. “Black Snake Moan” is a story of redemption from and by “the blues,” but the extreme plot twists are hard to take seriously.
